Third session of the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples

Study on indigenous peoples and the right to participate in decision-making
At the third session, one of the agenda items will be the presentation by the Expert Mechanism of the draft of the progress report on the study on indigenous peoples and the right to participate in decision-making. For this item, the Expert Mechanism will welcome during the session, from observers and participants, comments and observations to be taken into account before the Expert Mechanism adopts the final version of the progress report to be submitted subsequently to the Human Rights Council.
United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples
The agenda item will provide an opportunity for a general discussion on the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. It will focus on good practices highlighting how the Declaration can be used at the international, regional and national levels to promote and protect the rights of indigenous peoples.
Meetings with the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights and fundamental freedoms of indigenous people
The Special Rapporteur, Professor James Anaya, will hold individual meetings with representatives of indigenous peoples and organizations, during the third session of the Expert Mechanism on 13, 14 and 15 July 2010. Representatives of indigenous peoples and organizations may request a meeting with him with regard to matters that fall within his mandate, including allegations of human rights violations. - Requests for a meeting with the Special Rapporteur
- Requests for a meeting should be accompanied by written information on the issues to be presented to the Special Rapporteur, or relate to written information previously submitted to him.
- Requests should state the names of the peoples who will be attending the meeting.
- The Special Rapporteur may not be able to meet with all those requesting a meeting, because of time limitations. Priority will be given to those who submit a request and corresponding written information by Friday 18 June 2010, to email@example.com. Lunch time events
During the session, from 13 to 16 July 2010 lunch time events related to the mandate of the Expert Mechanism can be organized from 13:30 to 14:45. Due to the limited availability of rooms, only two lunch time events can take place each day.
The Expert Mechanism is encouraging the organization of lunch time events that contribute to its mandate and more specifically to the agenda of the session, in particular in relation to the right of indigenous peoples to participate in decision-making and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
