124- 421 victims of bonded labour and serfdom will benefit from this year’s project. The project titled “Advocating for the eradication of slave labour in Brazil through impact litigation in the Inter-American Commission and Court of Human Rights and the empowerment of civil society networks” will be given a grant of US$ 12,200.
Background of the organization:
Centro Pela Justicia e o directo internacional is an organization dedicated to litigating cases of grave human rights violations before the Inter-American Commission and Court of Human Rights. It is part of the CEJIL network which covers the entire American region.
Goals of the project:
- Stimulate improvements in law and policy for the effective punishment and prevention of slave labour, through the use of the Inter-American Commission and the Court of Human Rights.
- Provide legal assistance to victims of slave labour, as part of impact litigation of strategic cases before the Inter-American Commission and Court.
- Empower non-governmental organizations in Brazil to understand slave labour, in order to encourage increased legal defense of victims of slave labour at the national and international level.
Main activities:
- Bring cases before the Inter-American Commission involving slave labour to advance jurisprudence in the IAS.
- Hold two workshops for non-governmental organizations in states of Brazil with the highest incidence of slave labour.
