Mali (Terres des hommes)

Migration of young girls from the countryside to the urban centres, namely to the city Bamako, has reached an alarming extent. With this year’s grant of US$ 15,000, the project titled “Défense des jeunes filles domestiques à Bamako” helps assisting 130 young girls, victims of domestic labour.

Terre des Hommes is a non-governmental organization founded in 1960 providing direct assistance to children, particularly to victims of child domestic labour. Terre des Hommes is active in 11 developing countries in Africa, Latin America and Asia and cooperates with local associations.

Goals of the project:

  • Contribute to the protection and social and professional integration of young rural and urban girls who are seeking employment or who are illegally employed in domestic labour.
  • Special focus was put on the improvement of the status and work/life conditions of domestic workers, but also on the reinforcement of the capacity of domestic

Main activities:

  • Providing humanitarian help such as shelter/counseling/orientation to help the girls coming from rural areas to the city.
  • Providing legal assistance: mostly carried out through regular visits, and support for cases of SGBV.
  • Providing training in i) literacy, ii) introduction to income generating activities, iii) awareness raising and sensitization, and iv) domestic economy.
