Niger (Timidria)
30 victims of forced marriage were assisted with a grant of US$ 15,000. The project titled “Request for humanitarian aid for 30 released victims of slavery” was carried out in 2006.
Background of the organization:
TIMIDRIA is an association for the protection of human rights, founded in 1991. The Organization deals with slavery, trafficking in persons and combating discrimination. Its present activities include community schools and combating clandestine migration through the Sahara to Europe, part of an international campaign on the risks of African clandestine immigration.
Goals of the project:
- Create conditions for newly liberated slaves to support themselves financially; through actions such as micro-credit, etc.
- Sensitize the population and the victims on human rights in general and on laws criminalizing slavery in particular.
Main activities:
- Training through civic education, human rights and responsibilities.
- Village meetings with a view to reaching other slave owners.
- Fund for income generation activities.
- Purchase of 30 parcels of land to construct houses for the victims, with room for agriculture;
- Pay the cost of school fees for their children.
