Special Rapporteur on the Human Right to Safe Drinking Water and Sanitation – Mandate extended
On 24 March 2011, the Human Rights Council renewed the mandate on water and sanitation for a period of three years. At the same time, the resolution changed the mandate's title to Special Rapporteur on the human right to safe drinking water and sanitation. It was adopted by consensus and had 60 co-sponsors.
The Special Rapporteur, Ms. de Albuquerque, welcomed the resolution as a step that brings her mandate in line with the recent recognition of the right to safe drinking water and sanitation by the Human Rights Council on 30 September 2010. “The human right to water and sanitation is legally binding and has the same status as all other human rights”, she added. “In the upcoming years of my mandate I intend to focus on supporting States and other actors in the implementation of this right – to make it reality for everyone.”
