HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS IN YEMEN

A United Nations report has warned that a humanitarian crisis is looming in Yemen following the ongoing conflict in the country.

A UN Human Rights team visited the country in June 2011 to conduct an assessment mission following violence during demonstrations. In a report presented to the Human Rights Council the team has recommended further investigations into human rights abuses in the country.

LIBYANS READY FOR HUMAN RIGHTS

"They realize that they have paid a price, the human price that they paid to turn the page on human rights violations and they are very clear that they want to build a new Libya," UN Human Rights chief of Rule of Law section Mona Rishmawi at the UN Human Rights office said.

Rishmawi was part of a UN Human Rights team that visited Libya from 4-11 October 2011.

Dr DENIS MUKWEGE

Dr. Denis Mukwege co-founded and runs Panzi hospital, a General Referral hospital in Bukavu, in the Eastern province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He treats at least 10 victims of sexual violence a day. He describes rape in the region as a weapon of war, which has destroyed communities.

UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, James Anaya, calls on indigenous peoples to build on their capacities, but at the same time protect their cultures and way of life.

UN HUMAN RIGHTS ANTI SLAVERY EXPERT

UN independent expert on contemporary forms of slavery, Gulnara Shahinian, says despite the abolition of slave trade years ago, it still manifests itself today in various forms. She called for an end to in modern forms of slavery including bonded labour.
