USA: UN launches follow-up mission on nuclear legacy in the Marshall Islands

GENEVA / NEW YORK (20 April 2012) – United Nations Special Rapporteur Calin Georgescu will visit the United States of America from 25 to 27 April as a follow-up visit to his recent country mission* to the Republic of the Marshall Islands, to assess the impact on human rights of the nuclear tests conducted by the USA between 1946 and 1958.

“In Washington I will continue assessment of the efforts undertaken by the governments of the United States and the Marshall Islands to eliminate or mitigate the negative effects of the testing on the Marshallese,” said the UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights obligations related to environmentally sound management and disposal of hazardous substances and waste.

“I look forward to engaging further with the US Government on finding effective, durable and sustainable solutions for the Marshall Islands,” he added. From 26 to 30 March 2012, Mr. Georgescu undertook the first ever visit to the Marshall Islands by an independent expert of the UN Human Rights Council.

During his three-day mission to the USA, the Special Rapporteur will hold meetings with several stakeholders, including government officials and civil society organizations. Based on information gathered during the visit, the Special Rapporteur will prepare a report containing his conclusions and recommendations and present it to the Human Rights Council in September 2012.

Calin Georgescu, the Executive Director of the National Centre for Sustainable Development in Bucharest (Romania), was appointed Special Rapporteur in 2011 by the Human Rights Council. As Special Rapporteur, he is independent from any government or organization and serves in his individual capacity.
