The United Nations Global Study on Children Deprived of Liberty is to be funded through voluntary contributions (in line with § 52.d of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Resolution).

United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted its Child Rights Resolution.

The funding appeal (and estimated budget) for the Global Study is addressed to Member States and key partners, private foundations, corporations and civil society organizations. These strategic partners will help to advance the human rights of children deprived of liberty and will provide a voice to silenced children all over the world.

The total estimated budget for the implementation of the Global Study is USD 4.7 million. Until September 2017, only two governments (Switzerland and Austria) had made financial contributions amounting to less than 5% of the total budget. Thanks to the emergency fundraising campaign carried out during the second half of 2017, by the Independent Expert together with key partners, further funds were provided by Germany, Liechtenstein, Malta, Qatar, the European Union (EU) and private foundations. These funds enabled the Global Study to effectively enter its implementation phase. However, the need to continue joint fundraising efforts remains, since the Global Study is still operating on essentially one fifth of its total budget.
