Extension of the deadline for applications for two vacancies of mandate holders to be appointed at the forty-ninth session of the Human Rights Council:

  • Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Burundi
  • Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967

EXTENDED APPLICATION DEADLINE FOR THESE TWO MANDATES ONLY: 2 DECEMBER 2021 (12 NOON GENEVA TIME)
To apply for these two mandates, (1) complete the online survey and (2) submit the application form in Word format, which can be accessed under the specific mandate in the table below. Application forms are mandate-specific and candidates wishing to apply for more than one mandate must submit a mandate-specific Word application form for each mandate applied for.

Note: This is an unforeseen vacancy due to the resignation of the current mandate holder.

APPLICATION DEADLINE FOR THIS MANDATE ONLY: 7 DECEMBER 2021 (12 NOON GENEVA TIME)

The application process for the mandate of the Working Group on the use of mercenaries is administered separately from that for the other 10 vacancies.
To apply for this Working Group mandate only, (1) complete the separate online survey and (2) submit the application form in Word format, which can be accessed under the specific mandate in the table below. Application forms are mandate-specific and candidates wishing to apply for more than one mandate must submit a mandate-specific Word application form for each mandate applied for. Only nationals of the States belonging to the regional group of Latin American and Caribbean States are eligible to apply for the Working Group on the use of mercenaries in this selection round. Please refer to the list of the United Nations regional groups of Member States.

For the following eight mandates, the application process opened on 14 October and closed on 25 November 2021 (12 noon Geneva time). APPLICATIONS ARE NO LONGER ACCEPTED FOR:

  1. Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP), member from Central and South America, and the Caribbean
  2. Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP), member from Central and Eastern Europe, the Russian Federation, Central Asia and Transcaucasia
  3. Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP), member from the Pacific
  4. Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights in the context of climate change
  5. Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan
  6. Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, member from Western European and other States
  7. Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances, member from Asia-Pacific States
  8. Working Group on the issue of human rights and transnational corporations and other business enterprises, member from Asia-Pacific States
Only nationals of the States belonging to the regional groups, for which specific Working Group vacancies have been advertised, are eligible to apply for the Working Group mandates. Please refer to the list of the United Nations regional groups of Member States.

For EMRIP members, candidates need to represent one of the three indigenous sociocultural regions for which vacancies have been advertised. Please see additional information on EMRIP.

Should the appointee to any of the mandates be a person with a disability, the United Nations would be obliged to ensure reasonable accommodation for the mandate holder in the implementation of his/her mandate. This may include provisions for the mandate holder to be accompanied during official travels by a personal assistant, and/or for additional conference services (such as sign language interpretation) in respect of meetings in which the mandate holder participates.
