To the GA at its 72nd session, 24 October 2017

Summary

In this report, the Special Rapporteur on the rights of persons with disabilities examines the challenges experienced by girls and young women with disabilities in relation to their sexual and reproductive health and rights, and provides guidance to States on how to ensure legal and policy frameworks that support their autonomy and address the structural factors that expose them to violence, abuse and other harmful practices.

Expert consultation

On 13 June 2017, the Special Rapporteur on the rights of persons with disabilities organized, with the support of Plan International and UNFPA, an Expert consultation on sexual and reproductive health and rights of girls with disabilities in New York. The meeting aimed primarily to identify gaps and challenges in the implementation of existing international and regional human rights standards in relation to the sexual and reproductive health and rights for girls with disabilities; as well as CRPD-compliant practices for the equal enjoyment of sexual and reproductive health rights by girls with disabilities. Participants included experts in the areas of sexual and reproductive health and rights, women’s rights and the rights of persons with disabilities. The findings of the meeting informed the Special Rapporteur's report on the same issue.
