Country visits

Pursuant to its mandate, country visits are undertaken following an invitation by the Government. Two or three members of the Working Group form the delegation carrying out the visit and aim to meet a wide range of stakeholders, including governmental institutions, members of civil society, victims of human rights abuses, and private military and security companies. During the visit, the delegation gains a first-hand account of the impact of mercenaries, mercenary-related actors, and private military and security companies on the enjoyment of human rights in a given country. It further examines challenges, and identifies and facilitates the exchange of good practices. The visit concludes with a briefing with key governmental interlocutors and a press conference where the delegation presents an end of mission statement with its preliminary findings. Following the visit, the Working Group presents a report at the Human Rights Council with findings, conclusions and recommendations to the State concerned.
