Consultations and Regional Activities

The Special Rapporteur is required by the Human Rights Council to promote the implementation of the Declaration on the Rights of Persons Belonging to National or Ethnic, Religious and Linguistic Minorities, including through consultations with Governments, taking into account existing international standards and national legislation concerning minorities, as well as to cooperate closely with other relevant stakeholders, including UN entities, other international and regional organizations, and civil society.

Furthermore, as outlined in his first report to the Human Rights Council, the Special Rapporteur highlighted the importance of bringing the mandate closer to the different regions and making it more responsive to regional contexts and realities. For this purpose the Special Rapporteur intends to organize a number of regional expert consultations and forums, which would provide more accessible and flexible platforms for contextualized discussions around the main thematic priorities of his mandate.
