Expert Group Meeting, May 2010 

The expert group meeting on “Human Rights of Older Persons” was organized jointly the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations Secretariat. It took place in Geneva on 25-26 May 2010. at Palais des Nations, room XXIII.

The meeting aimed at gathering contributions to the Secretary-General report pursuant General Assembly resolution 64/132 on “Follow-up to the Second World Assembly on Ageing”.  Meeting participants included members of CESCR and CEDAW, the Independent Expert on Extreme Poverty, academics, NGOs and staff from WHO, UNFPA and ILO.  The High Commissioner addressed the meeting on 26 May and highlighted the Office's commitment to strengthening its capacities and the development of strategies to improve the focus on the implementation of rights-based programmes for older persons.

Discussions focused on three main substantive areas, as follow:

a) Existing international and regional human rights standards and the work of human rights mechanisms

b) Existing national legislation, policies and programs as well as best practices at the national level

c) Gaps in the protection of human rights of older persons
