GENEVA (27 August 2014) – UN Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights Ivan Simonovic will visit Ukraine from 28 August to 3 September. During his visit, Simonovic will also introduce the fifth report on the human rights situation in the country by the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine.
The report will be released on Friday in Kyiv and Geneva simultaneously, at 10h00 Geneva time and 11h00 Kyiv time, at which time it will be posted on the website of the UN Human Rights Office (www.ohchr.org). The report documents the grave human rights violations and abuses committed in eastern Ukraine, and the impact of the intense and sustained fighting on the civilian population.
In Kyiv, Simonovic will hold a press briefing at 11h00 local time in the Crisis Media Centre, Instytutska street, 4 (Hotel “Ukraina”, 3rd floor) to introduce the report.
In Geneva, Gianni Magazzeni, Chief of the Americas, Europe, and Central Asia Branch will present the report at a press briefing at 10h00 local time in Press Room III at the Palais des Nations
During his visit to Ukraine, Simonovic will meet with high-level Government officials, civil society and other actors and travel to the eastern regions, with a view to assessing the human rights situation since his last visit to the country in May 2014. This is Simonovic’s fourth mission to the country since the beginning of the crisis this year.
