UN Voluntary Fund for Indigenous Peoples - previous session

Session 2022

The 36th session of the United Nations Voluntary Fund for Indigenous Peoples’ Board of Trustees took place from 5 - 9 December 2022 in Geneva. 

Due to continuous requests from Indigenous Peoples to be fully and effectively engage in the UN processes and meetings beyond those that are being held in New York and Geneva, the Board of Trustees recommended that the Fund would start to support indigenous representatives to participate in relevant regional forums and sessions that are within its current mandates. As a result, from 2023, the Fund will support the important participation of Indigenous Peoples in the regional forums of the UN Forum on Business and Human Rights Forum and the Bi-regional meetings of the Local Communities and Indigenous Peoples Platform of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

As per the approved Cost Plan for 2023, the Board allocated a budget for the travel-related purposes of 162 indigenous representatives to the following UN meetings:

• 14 grants to the session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (New, York, USA);
• 14 grants to the session of the UN Expert Mechanisms on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (Geneva, Switzerland)
• 14 grants to participate to the sessions of the UN Human Rights Council and its UPR, and the sessions of UN Treaty Bodies (Geneva, Switzerland);
• 14 grants to participate to the session of the UN Forum on Business and Human Rights- UNFoBHR (Geneva, Switzerland);
• 14 grants to participate to the meeting of the Local Communities and Indigenous Platform (Bonn, Germany);
• 14 grants to attend the SBSTA of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (Bonn, Germany);
• 14 grants to attend the meeting of the Local Communities and Indigenous Platform (Dubai, United Arab Emirates)
• 14 grants to attend the Conference of Parties - COP 28 (Dubai, United Arab Emirates);
• 25 grants to the regional forums of the UN Forum on Business and Human Rights; and
• 25 grants to attend the bi-regional meetings of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)
