Call for inputs - femicide watch

Femicide prevention initiative

In response to the global phenomena of femicide or gender-related killings and violence against women, the Special Rapporteur started a femicide prevention initiative in 2015, calling for the establishment of the “femicide watch” at the global, national and regional levels.

She proposes in her 2016 report that data on the number of femicides be published annually on 25 November, along with information concerning the prosecution and punishment of perpetrators. She also proposes the collection of comparable data on:

• intimate partner femicide;
• family-related femicide based on the relationship between the perpetrator and the victims; and
• all other femicides based on the country context.

2020 call for input

The Special Rapporteur seeks the ongoing support of States, National Human Rights Institutions, civil society actors, international organizations, academics and other stakeholders to provide data on femicides, including prevention activities. The most recent call for input focused on, for example:

• The existence of, or progress in, the creation of a national femicide watch and/or observatory on violence against women, or any plans to do so;
• Other measures or research and studies undertaken to prevent femicide or gender related killings of women, or homicide of women, by intimate partners or family members; 
• Information on the results of analysis of femicide cases, including the review of previous court cases and actions undertaken in this respect;
• Data on homicide/femicide or gender-related killings of women for the last 3 years (2018-2020); and
• Data of femicides during the Covid-19 pandemic and its comparison with such data before the COVID-19 pandemic.
