In the present report, which is being submitted pursuant to resolution 44/8, the Special Rapporteur addresses the issue of the protection of persons who practise law, since the free exercise of the legal profession is an indispensable element of the judicial guarantees that ensure a fair trial and the protection of human rights.

The Special Rapporteur’s forthcoming report to the Human Rights Council (2022) will focus on protection of lawyers from undue interferences lawyers may face in the free and independent exercise of the legal profession.

The Special Rapporteur prepared a questionnaire in order to elicit information from civil society organisations on relevant national experiences on this subject. A similar questionnaire has been sent to all Permanent Missions and Observer Missions to the United Nations Office at Geneva.

The questionnaire is available in English | Français | Español

Civil society organisations can send their responses electronically to [email protected], using the email title: "Submission to the report on protection of lawyers". Kindly limit your responses to 3,000 words and attach annexes where necessary.

The responses will be published on the website of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, unless otherwise requested.
