Summary

During his country visit to Maldives from 17 to 24 November 2019, the Special Rapporteur was given access to facilities of deprivation of liberty throughout the country and was able to conduct confidential interviews with detainees of his choosing, for which he expressed his appreciation to the Government of Maldives. In his recommendations, the Special Rapporteur urges the Government to reduce overincarceration, provide better conditions of detention and reinforce a zero-tolerance policy on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.
