Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

Article 34 of the Convention states that upon entry into force of the Convention, the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities shall consist of 12 independent experts.

Article 34, paragraph 2 provides that after an additional sixty ratifications or accessions to the Convention, the membership of the Committee shall increase by six members, attaining a maximum number of eighteen members. On 2 February 2010, France became the 80th State to ratify the Convention. In addition, in accordance with article 34, paragraph 7, the term of six of the members elected at the first election, in 2008, shall expire after two years, that is on 31 December 2010. Thus, at the 2010 elections, twelve seats in the Committee were filled.

The third session of the Conference of the States parties to the Convention took place in New York from 1 to 3 September 2010. The election of twelve members of the Committee was held on 1 September 2010.
