Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

The 11th session of the Conference of States parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities was held from 12 to 14 June 2018. The election to fill the nine positions on the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which would become vacant on 31 December 2018 was held on 12 June 2018 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Gender balance and geographical representation

In its composition at the time of the elections, there was one woman and 17 men in the Committee. The geographical distribution of members was as follows: one expert from Latin America and the Caribbean, five from Africa, five from Asia-Pacific, four from Eastern Europe, and three from Western Europe and other States Group.

Of the nine experts whose mandates were set to expire on 31 December 2018, one expert was a woman and eight were men; one came from Latin America and Caribbean, two from Africa, two from Asia-Pacific, two from Eastern Europe, and two from Western Europe and other States.

In April 2017, the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities adopted a statement on achieving gender balance and equitable geographical representation in the elections of members of the Committee. The Committee expressed concern that as a result of the 2016 elections, only one woman was left as member of the Committee. It also expressed concern about shifting geographical balance in the membership. The Committee called upon States parties to be mindful of the need to promote the geographical balance and the inclusion of women with disabilities in elections of the Committee to secure equal geographical representation and restore gender balance. The statement is also available below.
