Objectives

  • Highlight the risks faced by currently or formerly incarcerated individuals of being subjected to contemporary forms of slavery and other human rights violations, including concerns about state-imposed forced labor and the sexual exploitation of incarcerated or detained individuals.  
  • Showcase promising measures taken by States and civil society organisations as well as challenges faced related to labour during incarceration, access to justice and remedies, educational and vocational training during incarceration and reintegration of formerly incarcerated individuals in different countries/regions.
  • Discuss what further measures are needed to more effectively protect persons currently or formerly in detention from contemporary forms slavery without diminishing their chances of social integration, including through the implementation of the recommendations of the Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of slavery as contained in his report A/HRC/57/46.
