The eighteenth session of the Expert Mechanism will take place from 14 to 18 July 2025 in-person only.
Registration:
Registrations are open from 1st April and will close on 4th July 2025. No application will be accepted after this date.
- All participants should register through the online platform Indico (including representatives in possession of a grounds pass issued by the Security and Safety Section of the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG) or United Nations Headquarters in New York (UNHQ)).
- Participants will need to create a profile and complete the online registration before receiving confirmation of their registration by the EMRIP Secretariat. Confirmed participants will receive a QR code by email.
- All registered and accredited participants will receive a digital badge by email. This digital badge contains their photo, a QR code and information about the conference. Once downloaded onto a mobile device, it works in the same way as electronic boarding pass. For participants without mobile devices, there is an option to print a confirmation and obtain a paper badge at the Pregny Pavilion badging desk at United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG).
- Please note that participants will need to plan and fund their travels to Geneva. Participants are also responsible for organizing their own visas, if necessary.

Concept note on Item 7: International decade of Indigenous languages (2022-2032)
Participation
All participants are encouraged to contribute to EMRIP in a spirit of constructive, multi-stakeholder dialogue, keeping a focus on the theme of the discussion; and are strongly encouraged to include concrete recommendations in their statements. EMRIP experts chairing the items will use their discretion in managing interventions from the floor in order to enable different stakeholders to participate in the dialogue and to ensure a balanced debate.

The speaking time will be limited to 3 minutes for all participants.
All participants wishing to take the floor during the different Items must register on the list of speakers. Online registration for the list of speakers will be opened for a week before the beginning of the session, from 7 until 11 July 2025 (09h00-18h00 Geneva time). Additionally, in-person registration will be available before the beginning of each meeting. Time slots to sign up for the speakers’ list will be posted at the entrance of room XIX and next to the registration desk (close to the podium on the right).

The speakers will rotate among Member States, accredited Indigenous Peoples` Organisations, National Human Rights Institutions, UN agencies and any other stakeholders at the discretion of the Chair. Each Speaker can speak once per agenda item, limited to 3 minutes.
To facilitate the work of the interpreters and the accurate capture of recommendations made by the speaker, all speakers are encouraged to send transcripts of their statements in advance to [email protected] and to [email protected]. Statements must be in a Word document, and clearly indicate which organization is making the submission, and the name of the Item under which they are making the statement.
Interpretation will be available for the entire session of the session in all six official languages of the United Nations (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish). Interventions may be delivered in any of these languages.
All session meetings will be broadcasted and archived on the United Nations Web TV.
SIDE EVENTS
Several side events will be held during the session of the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP), from Monday afternoon, July 14 to Thursday afternoon, 17 July 2025.
These events are organized by Indigenous Peoples Organizations accredited to the EMRIP, NGOs, Member States, UN entities, intergovernmental organizations, and others. Please note that the EMRIP Secretariat is not responsible for the side events organized during the session. Indigenous Peoples organizations, States and NGOs hosting a side event are responsible for the content of the event and the conduct of the participants.
Requests for a side event, including the title of the side event, the concept note, and the list of tentative speakers shall be sent between 1 - 30 May 2025. No requests for side events will be accepted after this date.

Time
Official meeting hours of the main Conference are from 10h00 to 13h00 and from 15h00 to 18h00. Side event will be organised for a duration of 1 hour during Conference meeting hours as well as lunchtime (13h00 to 15h00). No side events will take place before 10h00 and after 18h00.
Venue
All registered side events for the 18th session of the EMRIP will be held at the Palais des Nations, Geneva. Please note that there will be no hybrid events.
Interpretation services
Please note that the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) does not provide interpretation services for side events. However, interpretation support can be requested from the Indigenous Peoples’ Centre for Documentation, Research and Information (DOCIP).
If you require interpretation services, you may coordinate directly with DOCIP. They will facilitate the provision of interpreters for those who submit a request within the designated timeframe. Please be informed that DOCIP’s services are subject to specific terms and conditions, including the possibility of associated fees.

Technical requirements
- The conference rooms are equipped with automatized sound system.
- Side events shall be held during official hours (10:00 – 13:00; 15:00 -18:00) and lunchtime (13:00 – 15:00). Note: Side events NOT requiring interpretation and sound technician support, including those held during lunchtime shall be conducted in onlyone-language-format and at no cost.
- Side event organisers requiring interpretation services must arrange for sound technician support. This service can be provided upon request and is subject to additional cost. The standard cost for technician support is USD 67 per hour.
Billing/Cost
- Side event organisers are billed for UNOG sound technician support.
- UNOG Conference Services provide sound technician support, charged on an hourly basis. The cost will be invoiced directly to the responsible party.
- For first-time side event organisers, be advised that you will be required to create a Business Partner (BP) number to avail the sound technician services. To request for BP number, please contact [email protected]
- For Member States, UN entities, and other organisers who already have existing BP number, no further action will be required. However, you will need to provide your BP (Business Partner) number for billing purposes.
- For Indigenous Peoples Organisations that do not have a BP number may submit a special request to DOCIP to facilitate as third-party payment arrangement. However, it is important to note that DOCIP’s role is limited to assisting with the billing process for organisations without BP number. The full financial responsibility for covering the cost of sound technician support remains with the event organisers. Organisers can submit their requests directly to [email protected]

Media and Outreach
Journalists without UN credentials who wish to attend the EMRIP session with professional equipment should submit an online application on the Web site of the Media Accreditation and Liaison Unit: https://www.ungeneva.org/en/news-media/journalists. They will need to upload a letter of assignment on official letterhead from a bone fide media organization, signed by publisher, assignment editor or bureau chief, saying that the journalist is assigned to cover the 18th EMRIP session. Approved applicants will receive an email confirmation with instructions for picking up the credentials. Individuals with NGO accreditation will not be issued press credentials. Letters of assignment from NGOs will not be accepted for press credentials.

Without media accreditation by UN Geneva, media, including Indigenous community media will not be able to bring professional cameras and equipment into the United Nations.

Addressing and preventing acts of intimidation and reprisals against individuals and groups seeking to cooperate with the United Nations on human rights has been a long-standing priority for the UN.

The Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP) strongly condemns any form of intimidation or reprisals against individuals and groups who participate in the session or cooperate with the United Nations in the field of human rights. The safety and dignity of all participants, including Indigenous representatives, NGOs, and other stakeholders, shall be fully respected. EMRIP is committed to maintaining an environment of respect, dialogue, and understanding.
Everyone has the right to unhindered access to and communication with international bodies, including the EMRIP. Any act of intimidation or reprisals for cooperation with EMRIP and participation at official session of the EMRIP, can be reported orally to the Secretariat of EMRIP or in writing: [email protected] and to OHCHR reprisals team at: [email protected].
The identity of the individual or group reporting will be kept confidential.
