Sport and the Olympic ideal
At its twenty-fourth session, Council adopted resolution 24/1 A/HRC/RES/24/1 - العربية | English | Français | русский | Español on promoting human rights through sport and the Olympic ideal, in which it requests the Advisory Committee to:
1. prepare a study on the possibilities of using sport and the Olympic ideal to promote human rights for all and to strengthen universal respect for them, bearing in mind both the value of relevant principles enshrined in the Olympic Charter and the value of good sporting example, and to present a progress report thereon to the Council before its 27th session (September 2014); and
2. seek the views and inputs of States Members of the United Nations, international and regional organizations, national human rights institutions, civil society organizations and other relevant stakeholders in this regard.
At its twelfth session in February 2014, the Committee established a drafting group tasked with the drafting of the report and designated the following experts as members of the drafting group: Mr. Al Faihani, Mr. Coriolano, Mr. Lebedev (Rapporteur), Mr. Seetulsingh (Chairperson) and Mr. Zhang.
The Committee also requested the drafting group to submit a draft progress report to the Advisory Committee, after circulating it to all members of the Advisory Committee for approval electronically, before the thirteenth session of the Committee, with a view to its submission to the Council at its twenty-seventh session, taking into account the replies to the questionnaire distributed after the discussion at the twelfth session of the Committee.
The progress report was accordingly submitted to the twenty-seventh session of the Council (A/HRC/27/58).
At its thirteenth session in August 2014, Ms. Hananía de Varela joined the drafting group and Mr. Al Faihani was designated to replace Mr. Seetulsingh as Chairperson of the drafting group. The Committee also took note of the progress report submitted to the twenty-seventh session of the Council and recommended that the Human Rights Council request the Advisory Committee to submit a final report to the Council at its thirtieth session.
At its twenty-seventh session in September 2014, the Council adopted resolution 27/8 (A/HRC/RES/27/8) wherein it requests the Advisory Committee to finalize the study on the possibilities of using sport and the Olympic ideal to promote human rights for all and to strengthen universal respect for them, and to present it in a report to the Human Rights Council before its thirtieth session (September 2015).
In line with Council resolution 24/1, requesting the Committee to seek the views and inputs of different stakeholders, the following questionnaires were prepared and disseminated by the Committee in March 2014 to Governments, international and regional organizations, national human rights institutions, civil society organizations and other relevant stakeholders:
