BACKGROUND

There are numerous varieties of Chinanteco inherently intelligible, also with other dialects and languages, spoken by over 70,000 people, including several thousands of monolinguals. Speakers use Spanish as second language, but outlying towns are not as bilingual as the centre. Chinanteco belongs to the Oto-Manguean family.
