BACKGROUND

The Dhimal people live in southern belts of Morang, Jhapa and Sunsari districts. Dhimals regard themselves as Kirant. The language of Dhimals belongs to the Tibeto-Burman language family. Almost 90 percent of Dhimals speak the mother tongue. The state-run newspaper Gorkhapatra has been dedicating a full to promote Dhimal language since 2007. Also, school curricula for grade 1 to 5 have been designed in Dhimal language.
