BACKGROUND

It belongs to the Indo-European family, Slavonic group, West Slavonic subgroup, and has nearly 5 million speakers. Slovak is the official language of Slovakia, and is largely inherently intelligible with Czech, though it is a separate language with a slightly different alphabet and a distinct literature. As a national language, it developed in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, prompted by a rise in the Slovak people's awareness of their national identity and the accompanying need for education and literacy.
