Expert on international solidarity to visit Suriname

GENEVA  – The Independent Expert on human rights and international solidarity, Cecilia M. Bailliet, will conduct an official visit to Suriname from 20 to 28 January 2025.

During her visit, Bailliet will assess how Suriname’s international cooperation and solidarity activities contribute to the promotion of human rights in the country and internationally. She will focus on the inclusion and participation of youth, women, Indigenous and Tribal communities, persons with disabilities and minority groups in solidarity actions and expressions to address challenges such as climate change and global inequality.

The expert will visit Paramaribo where she will meet with Government officials, civil society organisations, academics, representatives from the legislature, the judiciary, UN agencies, and the diplomatic community in order to seek their views and contributions on human rights and international solidarity in Suriname. She will also visit Indigenous and Tribal communities, including in the hinterland village of Palumeu.

Bailliet will hold a press conference at 12:00hrs on Thursday 28 January at the Courtyard Marriot hotel, Anton Dragtenweg 50-54, Paramaribo. Access will be strictly limited to accredited journalists.

The expert will present her final report to the UN Human Rights Council in June 2025.

Independent Experts/Special Rapporteurs/Working Groups are independent human rights experts appointed by the United Nations Human Rights Council. Together, these experts are referred to as the Special Procedures of the Human Rights Council. Special Procedures experts work on a voluntary basis; they are not UN staff and do not receive a salary for their work.
