Background

The project “Responsible Business Conduct in Latin America and the Caribbean” (RBCLAC), designed and funded by the European Union, and implemented by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) - in collaboration with the UN Working Group on business and Human Rights -together with the  International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), aims to promote responsible business conduct practices in line with international standards. in Latin America and the Caribbean in line with RBC international standards – the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights  (UNGPS), the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises and the ILO Tripartite Declaration of Principles concerning Multinational Enterprises and Social Policy.  ( See here the Brochure of Alignment among RBC–related International Standards).

Scope and activities

The OHCHR activities of OHCHR are regional and country-specific. Country-specific activities are planned in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Panama and Peru.

Activities are implemented by OHCHR regional offices for South America and for Central America as well as OHCHR country offices in Colombia and Mexico, with the support of OHCHR Geneva  and the United Nations Working Group on Business and Human Rights around these three components: 

Component I - supporting the development and/or implementation of RBC-related public policies, in particular national actions plans on business and human rights (NAPs), and promoting the strengthening of access to remedy

Component II – Enhancing the understanding and capacity of stakeholders (especially business) to implement human rights due diligence

Component III – Support regional platform of RBC practices – the Regional Forum on Business and Human Rights in LAC
