Kindness beyond boundaries
17 December 2024
Harmful and dehumanising narratives on migration have been used to stoke fear, division and exclusion. In worrying trends, such narratives have also targeted and vilified people who stand up for migrants’ and refugees’ human rights. This has led to penalization, criminalization and other forms of obstruction of their work and stifling their voices.
This harms the human rights of people on the move and of people defending their human rights in equal measure. Moreover, it risks chipping at the foundations of our societies and our humanitarian and democratic values.
UN Human Rights knows that a different narrative on migration is possible. That people want human rights and the values that underpin them to be a lived reality.
Helping someone – sharing food, water, shelter with them, saving their lives, speaking out for them when they cannot, and providing any other assistance – is what we want to celebrate. As these acts of solidarity and kindness are ultimately an expression of what makes us human and holds our societies together.

Shared values
Everyone stands up for humanitarian values, because helping is part of what makes us human.
Guiding authorities
Locals care and contribute to informing authorities where help is needed.
Spreading kindness
Kindness spreads as locals help by giving food, water, and healthcare for migrants and refugees, growing a true sense of community.
Advocating fairness
Together, locals, migrants, and refugees advocate for fair, rules-based processes that help everyone equally.
Truth matters
Journalists report the truth on human rights violations without fear of retaliation. Their work sheds light on what’s happening and pushes for changes that ensure greater respect for human rights, making everyone safer.
Providing shelter
Families find safety while their cases are reviewed. Advocates provide clear guidance through the process.
Strength in unity
Migrants, refugees, and locals join forces to build a thriving local economy. United, they’re stronger.
Common goals
Locals, migrants, and refugees share a common goal: peace and harmony. Each person’s unique contribution brings them closer to this shared future.
Building trust
By upholding humanitarian and democratic values, people build a stronger community rooted in trust and belonging, not fear.
