“Economies that work for all”: A conversation with Jayati Ghosh
24 June 2025

A human rights economy places people and the planet at the heart of economic policies, investment decisions, consumer choices, and business models, with the goal of enhancing the enjoyment of human rights for all.
In the second episode of the podcast series “Economies that work for all,” Jayati Ghosh, professor of economics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, the United States, talks about how traditional economic models fuel inequality, and what needs to change especially with regard to unpaid care work, the conventional fixation on GDP as a benchmark for progress, and the global power disparities created by the current international financial system.
Ghosh proposes to “flip the script” and use a transformative approach by putting human rights at the centre of economic policy.
Organized by UN Human Rights and the UN System Staff College - Knowledge Centre for Sustainable Development, “Economies that work for all” looks into ways economies and human rights can work hand in hand and unlock progress towards the 2030 Agenda.
