CEDAW side event: Panel discussion on "Strengthening synergies between CEDAW and Women, Peace and Security Resolutions"

The OHCHR and the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (Committee), in collaboration with the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, the Global Network of Women Peacebuilders and UN Women will hold a panel discussion under the theme "Strengthening synergies between CEDAW and Women, Peace and Security Resolutions" during the Committee’s 72nd Session. This side event will highlight the increasing reporting on WPS in State Party reports to the CEDAW Committee, sustain the advocacy and further strengthen the synergies between CEDAW and WPS.

Agenda

The opening remarks will be held by:

  • Mr. Ibrahim Salama, Chief, Human Rights Treaties Branch, Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights
  • Mr. Daniel Klingele, Ambassador and Deputy Director of the Directorate of International Law, Federal Department of Foreign Affairs

The speakers will include:

  • Ms. Bandana Rana, member of the CEDAW Committee and Chair of the CEDAW Task Force on Women in Conflict Prevention, Conflict and Post Conflict Situations
  • Ms. Pramila Patten, Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict (joining via video message)
  • Ms. Hanaa Edwar, co-founder of the Iraqi Women's Network
  • Ms. Mavic Cabrera-Balleza, Chief Executive Officer of the Global Network of Women Peacebuilders (moderator)
  • Ms. Christine Loew, Director of UN Women Liaison Office Geneva

The event will be moderated by Ms. Mavic Cabrera-Balleza, Chief Executive Officer of the Global Network of Women Peacebuilders.

Please register for the 1 March 2019 in the CEDAW 72nd session using the UNOG platform.

Please note that individuals must bring their passport (or government issued photo ID) as well as their ground pass every time they wish to enter the UN premises.

The side event will take place at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Conference Room XVI, on Friday, 1 March 2019, from 13:00 to 15:00.

The Committee invites States parties to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, United Nations entities and specialized agencies, United Nations and regional human rights mechanisms, non-governmental organizations and other interested organizations and individuals to participate in this event.
