Meetings of States parties & elections
Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
States parties may nominate candidates who stand for election at a meeting of States parties. This meeting, called the Conference of States parties to the CRPD or COSP, is held every year (Article 40 CRPD). Elections take place every other year. Members are elected for a term of four years in accordance with article 34 of the present Convention.
The article states that "The members of the Committee shall be elected by States Parties, consideration being given to equitable geographical distribution, representation of the different forms of civilization and of the principal legal systems, balanced gender representation and participation of experts with disabilities" (Art. 34.4).
Members are elected in line with the Committee’s Rules of Procedure.
